WARNING: The intonation is compromised by this mod, because the bridge is not adjustable. Thats why I am considering an upgrade – pickup under each stone. We’l see 🙂
In my band I often needed to play the acoustic guitar and electric guitar within one song, so I decided to mod ficate my cheap Stagg guitar for this purpose. I removed standard tune-o-matic bridge and replaced it by self-made bridge with piezo pickup.
There is dual preamp mounted inside the guitar powered by +48V pahntom power from mixing console. The guitar has two outputs for each type of pickups. Both pickups (pair of magnetic and one piezo) have its own preamp. Guitar is also switchable to it’s original connection.
Guitar needs special cable: One end with stereo RCA 6.3 jack and second end with two XLR male for mixing console. There are condensers soldered inside the XLR males. See it in schematic.
I play through the computer with soundcard (TASCAM US-1641) connected to mixing console, so for switching between pickups and sounds (Acoustic / Rock / Metal etc….) I use Amplitube 3 guitar amp simulation with MIDI pedal connected to PC.
Here is the schematic diagram of guitar pream and cable:
And here is related youtube video with sound sample. All sounds are altered with Amplitube 3 guitar amp simulation software. But the clean sound – there is only slight EQ.
And some photos…
